Wynona Ward
Wynona Ward of Vershire, Vermont, for going above and beyond as a dedicated advocate for justice in rural Vermont. A survivor of childhood violence, Ward’s personal experiences helped lead this onetime truck driver to return to college in her forties, and then to law school, where she conceived and founded “Have Justice Will Travel,” a mobile, state-wide legal and support services program for low income victims of domestic violence. Under Ward’s direction, the program’s staff travels dirt roads to assist women and children in their homes, coordinate social services that help strengthen families, and fight abusers in court. With tenacity, toughness, and a loving heart, Ward regularly faces down some of the worst and most frightening elements of our society.
