Rachael Scdoris
Rachael Scdoris of Bend, Oregon, for going above and beyond as a trailblazing leader and role model for disabled athletes. Scdoris was born legally blind but did not let that stop her from, at age 16, becoming the youngest athlete to ever complete a 500-mile sled dog race. In 2006, Scdoris made history again when she became the first visually impaired athlete to complete the 1,200-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race in twelve-and-a-half days after fighting the Trail Committee to be allowed to participate as a disabled athlete against sighted athletes on an even playing field. She’s raised well over $100,000 for the United States Association of Blind Athletes to help other visually impaired athletes achieve their goals. Scdoris is competing in the 2008 Iditarod and hopes to raise $1,000,000 for developmentally disabled and brain damaged adults.
