Dr. Herbert Wilson

Dr. Herbert Wilson of Bismark, North Dakota, for going above and beyond with his work with Native Americans. For more than 50 years, Herbert, a New Englander by birth, has served as a public health doctor on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, home to the Three Affiliated Tribes—the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa. Wilson’s work on the reservation has included everything from setting bones and treating cuts to helping locals deal with alcoholism and suicide. His compassion for the underserved people of Fort Berthold led him to launch a program to eradicate tuberculosis on the reservation as well, saving countless lives in this often forgotten community.
