Rockefeller Twyman
Rockefeller Twyman of Rockville, Maryland, for going above and beyond in his efforts to find minority bone marrow donors. A longtime community activist, Twyman discovered one of his greatest causes when a fellow co-worker became ill with leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Twyman organized a bedside concert to draw attention to the need for more bone marrow donors, particularly minorities. Since then, he has organized numerous drives and even signed up potential donors off the street. At a time when only eight percent of the participants on the national bone marrow registry were minorities, Twyman’s tireless campaigning has resulted in the recruitment of more than 14,000 African-American and other minority donors.
